Lisa Davis could have had her moment
As a bigoted nutjob rambled on against Muslims at last night's Capo Unified School Board meeting, the president sat in cowardly silence.
So as these things tend to go in 2025, last night’s Capo Unified School Board meeting was a land of the nuts.
First, there are the Moms for Liberty-backed majority members (President Lisa Davis and her More-God-in-school homeslices—Judy Bullockus, Jennifer Adnams and Lisa Zollinger), all of whom are MAGA 4 Lifers unwilling to utter a public peep about ICE agents potentially surrounding/approaching our schools. They are a creepy lot of women who ran on bubbles and sunshine and smiles and love but desperately aspire to follow the Jack Hibbs Approach to Public Education (aka: Christ! Christ! More Christ!).
Second, there was the let-the-public speak segment, which is always interesting but last night, well … um … take a listen …
Although I asked around, no one I know was able to identity the Jean-Luc Picard-meets-David Duke knockoff in the ill-fitted blue jacket and Grim Reaper glare. His last name is Krause, he apparently roams Orange County seeking out meetings, and he’s most certainly the guy you don’t want attending your Eid al-Fitr shindig. As I watched his two-minute xenophobia-phon, I kept thinking, “What the fuckity fuck fuck is going on at our local school board meeting, and why is no one stepping in to stop him?”
Then I remembered: The school board president is Lisa Davis.
For those who might not know, Davis puts the light in lightweight. She’s a MAGA enthusiast who attended Trump rallies and fancies herself another Sonja Shaw, the state superintendent candidate who never met a trans athlete unworthy of her ridicule. Davis, for those lacking memories, was the Einstein who lassoed the Gays Against Groomers dude into a meeting earlier this year—just for shits, giggles and a little good ol’ fashioned hate grouping.
And as I watched Krause’s rant via the YouTube live feed, I kept hoping that Davis would shock the world and interrupt him, stop him, slam her fist to the table and say, “Hey! No! No! No! This is not a place for your hate!” I kept waiting for Davis—a devout Mormon who attends church weekly—to follow the love-conquers-all teaching of her bishop. To speak up on behalf of love and tolerance. To show that there are things more important than one side or another. To make clear this crumb and his bigotry had no place in our district.
I kept waiting.
And waiting.
And waiting.
And waiting.
And waiting.
And waiting.
She said nary a word. The gavel remained prone. Davis just let Hitler, Jr. spew his hate. Which, honestly, shouldn’t have surprised me. When you kneel before a president who mocks people for their looks, their hair, their makeup, their breasts, their intelligence; who has endorsed the assaulting/kidnapping (by masked agents, no less) of Brown Latino Americans for the crime of being … Brown Latino Americans; who only knows the language of hate and divisiveness … why in God’s name would I ever, ever, ever expect Lisa Davis to do the right thing?
Finally, at long last, a Muslim man stepped to the mic …
He said what needed to be said, and spoke as one who understands and appreciates the diversity of America.
Most important, he did not cower.
He expressed himself as a leader should.
[Sigh]
If only we had one.
Also, kudos to the proud Muslim American who spoke up.
I can't believe the world we are living in, thank you for keeping us aware of what is happening within our communities. Its disgusting when individuals like this are giving a platform only to spread their hate and conspiracies. But knowing that someone running the meeting didn't do anything to denounce this behavior is even more disturbing.
