The boy’s name is Liam Ramos. He is 5, and calls Columbia Heights, Minn. home.

Within the past few weeks, he and his father were captured and taken away by ICE agents as they were driving home from pre-school. Nobody is quite sure where they are at the moment, but most guesses suggest some sort of detaining center in Texas. “We have clients who, after they are picked up, are whisked away to the airport literally within hours,” said Marc Prokosch, the family’s immigration attorney. “The family is pursuing an asylum plan, which is lawful to do.”

Gordon Severson, a reporter for a local TV station, spoke with Zena Stenvik, the school superintendent. She doesn’t know what to say to parents, what to say to children, what to say to Liam’s little friends. What does she tell them about his disappearance? What does she tell them about the masked men with machine guns all over town? Does she reassure them they’re safe, when they’re not? Does she lie and say people, truly, are good?

What does she say?

“ICE agents have been roaming our neighborhoods, circling our schools, following our buses, coming into our parking lots and taking our children. The sense of safety in our community and around our schools is shaken and our hearts are shattered," said Stenvik. “Why detain a 5-year-old? You can’t tell me this child is going to be classified as a violent criminal.”
