As a former Governing Board member of the LBUSD, I appreciate this piece. One of the facts that is often lost is LBUUSD is one of the few basic aid districts in California. It benefits when property tax revenue is high and has to plan for dips when assessments are challenged and revenue decreases. It also benefits from one of the most generous educational non-Profit, SchoolPower--a 501(c) 3 which raises goo gobs of money for teachers to supplement the budget. For a school district with only one H.S. of fewer than 1000 students, it has enriched IB and more AP courses than any HS its size.
Laguna School District fraudsters Viloria, Dixon and Ureno alliance is now trying to scam South Whittier School District. The Superintendent search team looks like a group of scammers.
As a parent and a former teacher, I have found so many variables are in play that make or break the success of a student, teacher or school. It's not just about money invested and certainly not per pupil or teacher. I have personally experienced teachers in a $44.5K/pupil NY school who took my child's state tests and passed my child along as college material. He hates the idea of attending ANY kind of class today. Why, because his teachers and administrators felt that test scores were more important to a high achieving school district that supported high property values than an individual student's actual post-graduate life where he could not read or understand text beyond a sixth grade level. Then there are other variables that determine success in schools, a child's peers. Kids can be a mean nasty bunch of little monsters. It is really difficult for them to be otherwise if their filthy rich parents and coaches and some teachers model behavior that tells them they have to win at all costs. I think this is what people are objecting to when they see the cost/pupil number. Schools, made up of teachers and administrators and parents and their children, are basically a crap shoot. There are some really good, caring ones and parents need to be there to support their child whatever cards they are dealt.
