Last night's Capo Unified School District board meeting was a waste of time (unless you were a far-right culture warrior looking to pass a toothless resolution).
Thanks for continuing to shine a light on the darkness! They achieved their goal of distracting from the racial slur issue, but I hope the pressure for accountability continues. I was the second to the last speaker at 11:10 and only a dozen people were left in the room. The most heartbreaking comment came from the highly qualified candidate who should have been elected instead of Lisa Davis. She spoke of the destruction of our reputation - a precursor in the destruction of public education. 💔
Major kudos to you Jeff for standing up this blatant bigotry. I have to wonder how this utterly unnecessary and mean spirited resolution makes trans kids feel? Even more marginalized? Even more alone? Even less accepted? And how many trans kids will even want to try out for sports knowing that the school board is overly hostile to them?
Another fact that makes K-12 sports unfair: parents paying for private coaching. My 8 & 9 y/o grandsons play in a BB league on the Westside. Several on their team and have once a week private coaching. Curious, I asked one of the Moms on the cheer bench what such coaching costs. Only $500 per month per kid/per sport unless you have a celebrity coach! Yes we debate the fairness of trans athletes? Sheesh.
Women athletes often play on boys' teams as children, so that they can play at a level that allows them to get better by competing against equals, rather than dominating against those who aren't as good as them. The thing that is unfair about your comment is that it assumes that girls can't compete against boys.
The worst part of the trans women in sports debate is that the “protect women’s sports” people haven’t done a thing to actually advance equality within sports. They couldn’t give a shit about fair practice times, equal equipment and field space, and basically any of the other things that could advance youth sports for women. They only act like they care about women’s sports when it comes to putting trans kids to the sword. John Oliver’s episode about the debate is probably the most perfect argument against banning trans women in sports
Yes. It’s a culture war. We’ve had these same rules for at least decade and not a peep until the sheep were told to be outraged. Waiting for their next shiny object issue. Living in fear.
Funny, I’ve known several transgender people for a couple of decades. You are so easily manipulated🤣. They aren’t confused but you certainly are. Everything is a conspiracy when you understand so little. Keep living in fear though!
I think a higher level issue about these board members is they are willing to protect some kids but not others when in fact they represent them all. There is no common good here, it is selected good based on their own personal views.
Also, you have a major problem: 1. You folks don't intimidate me. 2. I'm calling out your unhinged bullshit. 3. I'm gaining readership at an insanely fast pace. 4. Y'all can no longer hide behind your "We're just some smiling soccer moms" nonsense. It's Dre Day.
I love your Detroit Tigers cap! In the overall scheme of everything that is important, trans athletes playing high school sports is a non-existant problem. What about banning naturally gifted athletes of both sexes from playing the sports they excel in so that less gifted players can complete? Perhaps we should introduce a resolution to that effect at the next Capo School Board meeting.
I appreciate this conversation so much. As someone who supports Trans and especially Trans kids, I am conflicted on the "sports" argument. I always try to put myself in someone else's shoes to understand. So in this case, if I had a trans athlete that was on a team, and if I had a sis-gendered athlete, that lost a spot or was impacted due to a trans athlete. Can one fully support the trans community, but also be conflicted on issues, such as this? The majority of people don't think about it this deep. And it also looks and sounds like the Chris Rufo's of this world find things like this to use to spark fear and hate against marginalized communities. "They are grooming your kids, they are breaking your records, breaking their noses with volleyball, and taking away your spot on the D3 intramural team" . But I think the local arguments and votes have more weight then the national dialogue, and we must continue to engage in conversation, listen but persist and stand together for what we believe in. The Queer and Trans communities need us. But if that backing down or being rational is the right thing to do, it might not be the right thing at the moment.
You should bring her one of your books and maybe a couple of old SI issues. You can borrow my signed copy of Showtime or the Favre book that you were ki d enough to meet me to sign some years back at a coffee shop in Laguna!
Lisa Davis is fake. Fake teacher. Fake smile. Fake Native American. Fake school board president. She may care about some kids, but definitely not all kids. Not the brown and black kids, or the poor kids. And not only does she not care about the lgbtq kids but she is cruel and wants to hurt them. She targets them. She dehumanizes them. She recruits and encourages others to do the same. She is gross and evil and thank goodness the stupid shit she pulls won’t actually impact anything because power wise, she is a peon. A fake, cruel, evil, pathetic peon.
I completely understand why those far right goofs have no business being a part of any school board. However, they are using a culture war issue that even the LA Times says a majority of Americans stand behind. Their published poll stated that 2/3 of Americans want biological males banned from girls' sports. This isn't really controversial except to the far left activists.
I think this conversation definitely needs to be more nuanced than it currently is. On the international level sports governing bodies make determinations about the fairness of transgender athletes in women's sports based on research on how large the outcomes are between the sexes in a parricular sport, as well as factors like if the athlete is on hormone therapy or went through a male puberty or took hormone blockers. In some cases trans athletes are allowed to participate, in others they are not based on those factors. That is not a level of nuance the Capo school district is ever going to have.

You’re actually missing the point entirely. This is not about that. That is actually an interesting
conversation to have. But in this is not about that.

give girls the choice - don’t force them.

You’re giving Judy way too much credit. She has no idea who Marcus Garvey is. Keep up the fight. 💪🏻

Amber, use your name. It’s ok
Big difference. I use my name, and place it atop every ... single ... word I write. You hide in the shadows like a little coward.

And any idiot can just be a troll and an asshole. Congrats!
Cowards hide behind fake names…but you do you.

Not angry. That’s more of a maga thing. Kinda like trolling old comments.
Oh and her tan is fake too. Super yuck.

Yup.
Thank you. This is new to me but I have 2 kids in school in this district.
We are waking up to the bs thanks to you
No doubt these kinds of meetings go on in small communities
