Now she just might learn why it never pays to side with Donald Trump.
As you’re reading this, the big news story in America is the Republican effort to redistrict Texas to land five more congressional seats for Donald Trump.
And, if we’re being honest, most everyone knows this is preposterously fucked up and wrongheaded and indecent and a pathetic power grab. Even folks like Texas Gov. Greg Abbott (a moldy sponge of a man) surely understands how profoundly anti-democratic it all is. But, alas, Donald Trump gets whatever Donald Trump wants. So the state’s GOP douches are putting their all into the efforts, even threatening to make arrests of those who oppose.
Which leads us to California …
Gavin Newsom has made it clear that he thinks the Texas redistricting plan is sinister. However, he has also made it clear that, should the Longhorn State follow through with the bullshit, California will have no choice but to also redraw its district maps.
[Cue: Music]
At the moment, Republican Young Kim is the CA-40 congresswoman. And, even though there’s a spirited Democratic race to run against her, Kim remains a prohibitive favorite to reign next year in a more-red-than-blue district.
But …
What if one of the districts California changes is CA-40? What if, with a little jiggering here and a little jiggering there, some Republican-leaning peeps are shifted left, are shifted right, are shifted up, are shifted down? What if, instead of having a 53-47 GOP edge, Young Kim is now running in a landscape with a 53-47 Democratic edge?
Answer: Goodbye, Young Kim.
Farewell.
Adios.

To be honest, I hope it doesn’t come to this. I hope—against logic and reason—legislation to ban mid-decade redistricting efforts nationwide somehow passes, and we can all be just a wee-but more normal.
But I’m not holding my breath.
And here’s the thing: Should her district’s boundaries change, Young Kim would have no one to blame except for, well, Young Kim. She has uttered nary a peep against the Texas plan; has never raised a finger to say to Trump, “You know this is wrong.” Has issued no statements. Pronounced no position. She sits there, and takes it, and nods, and smiles, and works her rear off to be Trump’s lackey. She is a timid little child, paralyzed by fear of making Daddy mad.
Well, with that Young Kim has earned the right to have her district shoved into a blender and spliced and diced and reconfigured.
She messed around, and may well find out.
