Today’s Globe and Mail has an article about upcoming Canadian by-elections, which I understand to be what we would call special elections. It says “Prime Minister Mark Carney on Sunday announced that six by-elections will be held on Dec. 7 in Quebec, Ontario and Saskatchewan.”
What struck me is that the campaigning for those elections will last just over a month. Our special elections are held over a period of about 4 months from the time the election writ is issued (if I understand the statute correctly).
I think we should (1) limit the amount of campaign time to no more than 6 months, and (2) forbid or severely limit private/corporate funding of elections. I don't know how we might accomplish these objectives, but I see lots of upsides.
I'm wondering if the town was named after the the John Milton, author of Paradise Lost. That would be apt.
In contrast to the politicians in that Canadian Paradise, we have Donald Trump, who would divide and ruin America to satisfy his own venal ambitions. The updated version of Paradise Lost could seamlessly substitute Donald Trump into the role of Lucifer:
This is the first time I’ve seen that campaign video, but it’s not surprising at all. We do things differently in Canada. That’s likely why Trump has such a problem with us.
Of course Canada has its share of problems. We have racists and religious zealots too. But generally speaking we are kind & civilized people. Even our hard right separatists are less inflammatory than the MAGA crowd.
That’s the kind of small city spirit we kind of hoped for in the Tustin mayor’s race. But alas Austin’s commitment to run a fair and clean campaign did not have a period at the end of it. Not that I’m surprised. MAGA politicians have given racist, cruel, lying assholes a platform and we have to dismantle it!!!
Ah, if only! How inspirational.

"Here we may reign secure, and in my choyce
To reign is worth ambition, though in Hell;
Better to reign in Hell, than serve in Heav'n."
