I worked with Shari at city of huntington beach. She was the worst manager of people I ever saw. Every one of her employees couldn't stand her. I could list all kinds of horror stories. While she was honest, which is no small thing, when someone is universally disliked, there is obviously an issue
I retired in 2010. I worked in accounting. She started 1996. I talked to her most days unfortunately. If she was a relative or friend, I would have strongly advised her to not be in any type of supervisory position. She has zero people skills. I am also a cpa and when she originally became treasurer, I was hopeful she would bring some expertise, etc. But one day early on I remember a convo we had and she said something like she was unsure of what to do because in her prior positions she always had someone helped her with major issues. If she wasnt an elected official, she would have been fired long ago. She would stay late and go through employees trash cans. That's one of 134,897 insane things she did.
I voted for you and told everyone I know to do the same.
When I voted this last week I checked this one out before I chose who I was going to black the box for. I had heard about Freidenrich before regarding her very clear ineptitude at her job. I voted for Schulz.
Folks, we always need to vote down ballot and this is one of the great examples of why. Hopefully more people look into this race before they color in the box or skip it. Otherwise, we end up with keeping poorly performing people in their jobs in elected office. That HAS to stop.
Yep. And Democrats (even for non-partisan seats) need to have someone in EVERY race. It's how you build bench strength and gain power at the local level.
Why is Mom's for Liberty terrorizing every single school board across America? Because they put up candidates for EVERY school board election. And as a result of it, now we have Sonja Freaking Shaw, an idiot bully, who could become the Superintendent of Public Instruction in California. That's insane.
That means we can't leave any seat uncontested anywhere.
I was on the FV school board for 12 years. There were almost no issues that would be considered partisan. And we worked well together even if i was the most liberal person on the board. With one exception, i likes all of the other board members. I know it is different now and that is really sad. When national politics infects local govt, it breaks local govt. But we can't just let the magats go unanswered. So I agree with you
Agreed on this. The tactics have been twofold. First, the existing office holders are terrorized and threatened, sometimes showing up outside their houses. Many office holders call it quits at that point when their physical safety is at play with themselves and their families. These are people at such a low level that they don't live in a secure environment and can't afford to hire 24x7 protection. After they are out, then the next step is to get their preferred candidate in place. It's very organized and successful in achieving their goals in many cases. It takes very brave people to run against this, but there are indeed some who do.
Thanks for keeping us informed, Jeff, in a very insightful and entertaining way. Who’s got time to dig into this kind of stuff, and what kind of people have the drive and energy to pursue these obscure offices? It’s a crazy world and we desperately need good leadership, not the current crop of miscreants that are running this circus.
Thanks to you I’ll be voting for Dana Schulz. Keep up the good work, glad there’s somebody out there that cares enough to do the digging.
When I voted, I googled this race, it took me 5 minutes to read about this race and affirmatively decide that Dana Schultz was the much, much better choice. This Shari lady seems like an incompetent nightmare.
It makes you realize that: a) So many people down-ballot suck just as much as those up-ballot who get attention and money; and b) the Democrats' strategy of not running candidates (even for non-partisan offices) in places like OC down-ballot "because it is a red area" needs to change. Well, it is changing. But for the last 20 years, we have let seats like this go uncontested because "it's red" and "we don't want to waste money, yadda, yadda.' These boring, down-ballot races build bench strength for eventual runs for higher office. We need people to care about these races because the Schultzes need to crowd out the Friedenriches.
There are really no issues in this job that would be red/blue. But incompetence is incompetence. I know her well. She is a terrible person for this job. I would say that if she was a democrat.
I agree. It's just that even non-partisan positions build experience in the campaign and electoral process if they should want to move on to partisan office.
Use bluevoterguide.com for page 3 of your ballot. They usually just list who is endorsing each candidate, but they have a couple of paragraphs of reasons not to vote for this person. Judges are on there, too!
She has no real understanding of governmental accounting. I prepared the city's financial statements and the discussions I had with her showed me that. She went crazy over minor, irrelevant things and couldnt grasp the big picture. I am sure you know exactly what I am talking about. I just ran the required disclosures of cash and investments by her. That's it. She wanted input elsewhere, but I just ignored her.
She is also very self centered and has no ability to have any empathy for others. She is very socially awkward. I believe that she is deeply insecure about herself. If she was a friend or relative, I would recommend lots of counseling. Had I had her as a supervisor, I would have quit. We all figured out ways to work around her to the extent we could. That some high ranking officials endorse her is just terrible. They either have no clue, which is a severe indictment of their knowledge and/or judgement.
I sometimes wonder what I would say to her if I ran into her. We never had harsh words or anything, since I mostly tuned her out. I just hope I never meet her again lol. Her going to the county was always gonna be bad. In a larger organization, her flaws would be exacerbated. And that has happened. Also, there was one dude in hb that contemplated a run against her, but he had young kids and understandably decided against it.
Sorry about your husband. Can't be easy at all. You have supporters in lots of places. Remember that. And of the voters with knowledge of her, i am sure you have near unanimous support

Thank you Jeff for the heads up. Haven't voted yet, but love your insight.
What a bitch.

It’s important in all races to run a blue candidate, but it’s sometimes very hard to find anyone to run.
Very true. There needs to be strong recruitment at the local level.

Also, I just made a donation. I wish we had connected earlier
