Sooooo ... the economy
Donald Trump promised a booming economy on Day 1. Let's remind the MAGA crowd of that. Over. And over. And over again.
So I just saw the above headline/photo combo in the New York Times, and I love love love love it. Because if there’s one thing Donald Trump enjoys, it’s making big, loud, I-guarantee-it election promises.
If there’s one thing Donald Trump hates, it’s being exposed as a fraud.
And that, dear readers, is what he is, and always has been: A fraud. Donald Trump didn’t write “Art of the Deal” (literally, it was penned by a ghost scribe). Donald Trump didn’t take his inherited money and quadruple it. Donald Trump didn’t rebuild New York City’s skyline. Donald Trump didn’t kick ass in the casino business. He has thrived as a huckster. A conman. The guy in Times Square ripping off tourists with fake Rolexes and the shell game. The guy who screams, “Look at that enormous owl!” while slipping his hand into your purse. Donald Trump bilked poor people with a fake “university.” Donald Trump’s airline failed. His steaks failed. His football team failed. If you wanna know who—deep down—Donald Trump is, well this old “Apprentice” clip sums him up to perfection …
And I just believe—strongly—that we, as the opposition, need to remind our fellow Americans that this guy is a serial liar. We need to remind them of Donald Trump saying this …
And this …
And this …
And then, after reinforcing that he promised (not suggested—promised) to save the economy, we need to state the facts. Which are:
• The Dow dropped more than 1,000 points yesterday, and Nasdaq cratered. All because of fears of a recession.
• Trump’s nonsensical bluster is awful for finances. You can’t threaten tariffs, then pull back, then return them, then promise more—without the instability killing investor confidence. ““The market volatility is much less about the bad news of tariffs and much more about the uncertainty of tariffs, especially uncertainty as to what the policy is, where it is headed, how long it will last and what the end result will be,” David Bahnsen, the chief investment officer at the Bahnsen Group, told the Times.
• Grocery prices are through the roof. Through. The. Roof. Which would be less of a deal had Trump not promised immediate drops. In fact, he didn’t merely promise. It was a campaign staple.
A piece in the New York Times noted that, “sudden deterioration in the outlook is striking, because it is almost entirely the result of Mr. Trump’s policies.” And while your MAGA friends will surely turn up their noses at mention of the newspaper, prices are prices, stock values are stock values, and everything Donald Trump guaranteed Americans in the leadup to last November’s elections was recorded and placed on YouTube.
Now, admittedly, Trump is president, and that won’t change any time soon. But it’s a lot harder to be impactful and successful when people turn on their leader. The cult members may well never see the light. But enough of our fellow citizens simply want to be able to afford dinner.
They expected Trump to deliver.
Let’s remind them that he has not.
And never will.
I read a quote yesterday that he said to "Shut up about price of eggs" Nice. Remember Trump said he was going to lower grocery prices from day one? How's that going?
He is an idiot.
