I was born in Brooklyn, worked in Times Square for 25 years, and seriously considered not moving here until someone could point me to a place where I could get a decent slice. I found it at Terra Mia just off the 5 in Laguna Hills. True NY-style pizza and a friendly staff. Try it.
Same people who think Truly pizza is amazing likely will rave over Gina’s. We live in an influencer world where the only thing that matters is getting into “it places” to generate clicks and make your network/followers think you’re into things they don’t known about. It’s performative, not real. Never look at a best of list and trust it.
I too am a pizza snob. late '70s labella's was the pizza ticket on the upper east side (that's another story).
Used to be 1/2 way decent pizza in north san clemente (kinda sorta maybe east capo beach), TJ's Woodfire Pizza. that was the best pizza in way-south Orange county!
As a fellow NY transplant, I couldn't agree more. (When I first moved here almost 40 years ago, everyone raved about Gina's. I didn't get it then, I don't get it now.)
I feel the same way you do about Japanese chain restaurants, like Silverlake Ramen or Yoshinoya rice bowls. They are so bad I'd rather make my own at home from scratch even if it requires driving to Gardena to the Japanese (not Korean) grocery stores to get the proper ingredients. Then when it comes to Pizza, there's only one place I'd go to in all of SoCal because it was opened by a NY transplant who ships the water from NYC to make the dough. Haven't been there since before COVID so I forget the name. Wonder if it survived the pandemic?
Jeff, I am sure you, like me, are still in morning over the sad demise of our beloved Maria’s. The one good thing Yorktown had and it’s gone. Wipe the place off the map. It has no value now.
The best pizza in Orange County is right near you at Brooklyn City in Laguna Niguel.
I don’t know about Gina’s Pizza but that Ted Cruz line was delicious!
