It’s refreshing to read about a political candidate with a compassionate point of view for a change. Homelessness is a problem almost everywhere in Southern California and our indifference reflects poorly on our overall humanity. I moved to south Orange County after living 35 years in Corona. The entitlement of some of the people I’ve met here is staggering at times.

Mission Viejo, pick this woman! She rocks! Wish I could vote for her, but I'm not in O.C.

Once again, thanks for you coverage of local OC elections. I don't live or vote in Mission V--thank god, but she would have my vote. From what I understand Mission V is a hot bed of board and care facilities for the elderly. Wonder how that affects housing availability and price.

Wow- great article Jeff. I love it when you shine a light on South OC local politics.

Laura is amazing!

Can you write about Dr. Natalie Guse for RSM City Council? Pretty please?

I hope she wins!! Mission Viejo needs good people on their city council.

What’s frustrating though is how defeating this is for candidates that do not have money to self-fund. It eliminates a group of people from being the representers rather than always the represented.

SB 42, a measure that will be on the November Midterm General Election ballot, will help address that problem in cities that are willing to adopt government financed elections. It doesn't address the issue completely, but it's a step in the right direction.

If that passes, I predict lawsuits based on Citizens United. The proposed law penalizes a candidate if an Independent Expenditure either is in support of them or opposes them. By law, said candidate has no influence over such IE's, yet the law penalizes them for such IE's.

Do we fight back? Or do we give up? Those are our options.

This is a federal not state issue in my opinion. Ideas our congressperson could pursue might be a Constitutional Amendment (President does not have to sign, but unlikely to pass due to 3/4 of the states needed to ratify), or work on the transparency issues of the dark money funding of super PAC's. Also, work on the definition of "coordination" between a candidate and a super PAC. By law, they cannot influence a super PAC in their spending. However, consider as an example Ken Calvert attending a party at the White House with the head of a super PAC who uses IE's either for him or against an opponent. Those situations lend themselves to the appearance of coordination. On the spending side, regulations might be invoked with respect to online media buys (disclosure now in tiny print is not comprehended by most people), maybe require media outlets to provide equal time to the other candidates. Another big one is the "primary purpose" as "social welfare" of the dark money funded 501c4's. Those rules could be tightened, tax triggers could be invoked. Several candidates in the US Congress elections are interested in Citizens United, so there's promise that some of these ideas or other ones can be pursued.

Yes it’s a federal issue, but given the current court, we’ve got to push back where we can and for now that change is possible through our state.

I saw Laura speak at Canyon Dems a few weeks ago, and I'll be happy to volunteer for her campaign in the fall.

MV needs to stop recycling old council members. No to Rhonda Reardon!

HI all, I just saw a DM I received over this and point taken. No shade intended on Laura. It's been clarified, too that yes it's easy to find via the search engine but a bit hidden if one starts at the MV website itself. Sorry for it appearing impolite.
