So … I dunno.
I keep reading about Democratic midterm optimism. I keep reading about the blue wave. I keep reading about the Democrats taking back the House and, perhaps, the Senate.
I keep reading it and reading it and reading it, and then this shit happens …
We have a president who believes there is winning and only winning. We have a president who doesn’t care for or understand democracy. We have a president utterly disinterested in Thomas Jefferson and George Washington; in Susan B. Anthony and Martin Luther King; in battles for independence and battles to defeat global tyranny.
We have a president who masturbates to himself and his lust for power.
And he will not just allow for defeat.
Seriously, if the Democrats aren’t aware by now—WAKE THE FUCK UP. This is the moment. It kicked into high gear yesterday, with an assault on California and voting; with some bullshit garbage about “voting crimes.” We are here, in the heat of what will be legitimate awfulness. A president’s dogged need to reign. A justice department beneath his thumb. A political party terrified of his wrath, and happy to curl up and coo.
I don’t know how this ends.
I am scared how this ends.
I suspect, come post-election day, we will need to take to the streets and take to the courts, for the two or three remaining threads of democracy are being torn from the garment. We are, as of now, pro-Putin, anti-voting, pro-war and watching helplessly as a madman focusses on a new D.C. golf course.
I am resolved to fight.
But, again, I am scared.
