Well said... not sure Mahan would survive front runner attention either (just seems like that kind of guy... you know... the ones with dicks). Always a fan of Katie Porter, even when she annoys the hell out of me, she's on the money about what ails our country and our state (did I mention dicks?). Thanks Jeff!

This is a great piece… ! I’ve been wondering if there’s ANY guy out there who DOESN’T have the would-be rapist problem, this is getting old. I’ve been thinking this country is so fundamentally racist, misogynistic, anti-Semitic that we’d never elect a woman. Then you think of the strength of a Mette Fredericksen, PM Denmark, who got the extreme giggles when reporting to her constituents that Trump planned to buy Greenland, and you think, yes , let’s get our strong women out there.

I’d like Katie. I’d feel safer & understood. We need a woman for balance & to call out the bad dudes.

Rob's avatar

Did you feel that Kristi Noem and Pam Bondi “balanced & called out the bad dudes”?

Eileen Penan's avatar

NO, but Katie did when she was in Congress.

So I guess it IS more complicated than just assuming someone with a vagina will be better than her predecessor.

Matt Mahan smells like Peter Thiel. No thanks.

Here is the latest Emerson Poll since Swalwell dropped out and it appears that Becerra is gaining in the polls. Becerra is definitely the candidate with the most relevant experience and accomplishments, so I will be voting for him. emersoncollegepolling.com/california-2026-poll-april/

It’s both ego and the sense of invincibility. After all, if Trump can so blatantly get away with it, why not him? And I beg to differ on accountability. The reason this keeps happening is because there are too few consequences. Dropping out of the race? Who cares? This guy, if what he’s being accused of is true, should be in jail. And so should others like him.

I like Katie. All she has to do is come in first among this motley crew. And how about Becerra? He could surge. Steyer grates on me. I heard him on a podcast with Molly Jong-Fast. I swear she asked him one question and he went for 20 minutes without stopping. So. many. platitudes. Katie is 1000 x better.

Yes, male politicians predictably suck -- many are out of control horn-dogs -- but Loren Bobbert, MTG, Nancy Mace, Pam Bondi, Kristi Noem, Jody Earnst ( hog-castating house member from the midwest), and a dozen other female right wing lunatics who are all to eager to bend over for tRump are enough to convince me to vote for the person, not the sex of that candidate. Granted, female politicans seem less likely to engage in sexual shenanigans than men -- although at least one in Sacramento was credibly accused of sexually harassing her female aids in office -- but that doesn't mean every woman who runs for office shines like the virgin Mary.

At the moment, I lean toward Porter. Steyer talks a good game, but it's hard to trust a billionaire these days, and Mahan feels like a poltical lightweight -- and a total opportunist -- with heavy money in his pockets.

Kamala could have saved us all this sturm und drang had she run for gov, but no, she was too busy gearing up to lose yet another presidential run. Hopefully that will happen in the primaries and not the finals of 2028.

I'm one of those folks who had planned to vote for Swallwell but will switch to Mahan. Not voting for a billionaire and I do find Porter very hard to like. Nothing to do with her gender as I'd be annoyed by the same traits if she were Karl Porter.

I doubt that. When women are abrasive, tough, "bitchy"? We are labeled emotional and difficult to work with.

Men acting with the same adjectives, including the "bitchy"? Just being strong, stepping up "as a man", asserting themselves.

Lie to yourself all you want. Women know.

Northpark's avatar

You don’t have to have a beer with her, you don’t need to like her “traits,” you can just judge her by whether she can get the job done. If we pick who candidates entertain us, we end up with people like Trump.

To that point, if competence were truly our measure, Becerra would be doing much better. The problem we have is that campaigning and governing are two very different skill sets.

Vote for whomever you want. Any Democratic candidate is better than a Republican. I'll be voting for Mahan who has more relevant experience and quantifiable accomplishments as Mayor of San Jose than Porter has. Please share with me Porter's accomplishments in Congress other than her viral social media moments.

You misunderstood my point, I didn’t say that Katie Porter was the best candidate, only that her behavior is being judged by a different standard.

Here is the latest Emerson Poll since Swalwell dropped out and it appears that Becerra is gaining in the polls. Becerra is definitely the candidate with the most relevant experience and accomplishments, so I will be voting for him. But you’re right, any Democrat is better than a Republican.

What if everybody in California just decided to write in Kamala Harris?

Xavier Becerra is the big winner with Swalwell dropping out of the CA Governor's race in disgrace. He has been SURGING, in large part due to a huge and sustained social media campaign by supporters and content creators. Becerra has always been the most qualified person in the race. He was a congressman for 20 years, AG of California, and HHS Secretary. He is a thoughtful and pragmatic progressive (i.e., he understands that we can't just get single-payer CalCare overnight. That is a promise no progressive can keep because of the legal barriers in place. There are steps to overcome these, and we need to start working towards them.) After a lifetime in the area, he understands the practical, rough-and-tumble.

Today's Emerson poll confirmed this. He is now second to Tom "I made billions on private prisons" Steyer, with Katie "get out of my fucking shot" Porter in third.

As a new Californian, this system of selecting a governor is scarring me. If we don’t coalesce around a candidate or two we are going to have a Republican governor. We’re all over the board here. We need to figure this out and fast.

Eileen's avatar

I don't understand the obsession to send dic pix and to make unwanted sexual advances. Baffling. OTOH, Matt Mahan are Xavier Beccera are the only ones with executive experience. Katie Porter has demonstrated some character flaws; we don't need a hot head in the governor office. What a fine mess due to egos and hubris. Several should have dropped out by now--looking at you Antonio.

So the PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES has been convicted of sexual assault and accused of sexual assault by multiple children per the “Trump Files”. Why doesn’t our president get held to ANY standards whatsoever??He’s a true POS and we should be demanding HE step down too

Transgression is an addictive fantasy, and a segment of the populace admire those who act on their fantasies. It is gross.
