NYT this morning did a piece on voter trending and how a lot more regions are trending red than are trending blue. Dems are growing "almost exclusively in America's wealthiest and most educated areas. Republicans are trending in less wealthy and less educated regions. 8.1 million people live in blue trending regions. 42.7 million live in Red trending regions. How do we duplicate Jeff Pearlman and place a JP avatar in every right trending counting in the country? Such great work!

Agree Mark. Where are more Jeff Pearlmans here in the substack community? Hi to you and the family.

Mark, we will see what transpires when the grocery bills start mounting and there are few people willing to pick crops in rural areas. Or, do the thousands of jobs Americans are not used to having to do.

Several years ago I read James Comey’s A Higher Loyalty and a comment he made, almost as an aside, still terrifies me. Comey said “I’ve never seen Donald Trump laugh.” This observation alone should reveal to anyone paying attention his bone chilling, sociopathic, lack of empathy and humanity (mix in his forced and disingenuous “smiles” - smirks just makes one’s flesh crawl).

No. FTG and all of his ilk. He wasn’t tricked, this was a conscious decision that he needs to live with. History will remember.

Such an excellent article/letter. I used to like Will - had him speak at my house to neighbors, tried to work with him on the eyesore reservoir issue for Spyglass homeowners, etc. Until he involved himself in a smear campaign against a dedicated public servant, refused her right to be next in line for mayor, all so he could put someone much more in line with his beliefs in office. And ran someone with absolutely no experience for office against another longtime dedicated Council person, “just because he liked him more.” And then they bragged about the “All Republican City Council, which are supposed to be a non-partisan positions. All of this, and much more, caused me to lose most of my respect for him. Until this last position as Chairman of the OC Republican Party, supporting the most vile excuse for a human being ever. The writer hits the nail on the head, “how will you ever look your children in the eye and explain why you openly supported someone that goes against every value we try and teach our children?” Good luck that day, Will.

In 1950 Senator Margaret Chase Smith was one of the first to speak out against Joseph McCarthy in her Declaration of Conscience. Sadly, I doubt we’ll see any Republican sitting members of Congress with the courage to do the same.

I sincerely hope Mr. O’Neil responds to this publicly; I want so much to understand the thinking behind Trump supporters. Sadly, I doubt any of us will receive an honest and introspective answer from him. I mean how could a public figure admit that they perhaps overlook Trump’s criminality, cruelty, immorality, and lack of ethics, just to get a big break on their taxes? How could they say out loud that perhaps his lack of empathy matches theirs? How could they announce that they too believe women should be 2nd class citizens with no bodily autonomy? I could go on, but you get my drift. Their internal motivations may be unspeakable, so they simply act “nice” and hope they’ll never be questioned by someone as honest and direct as the amazing Mr. Pearlman.

Nice approach, Jeff. Time will tell if Will can be rehabbed. Some amends are overdue for bullying everyday citizens, journalists, and the fire and police departments as he politicized our city government, school board, and beloved library pushing forward less qualified candidates and a national rightwing agenda.

Well said. It's good to remember that inside this MAGA cult are people with whom we probably disagreed but used to like and respect. I feel it is important, as we move into a full on dictatorship (listen to the May 24 and May 31 editions of Dalia Lithwick's Amicus) that we hold them accountable, if nothing else we have to call them out for all the gross, un-American dictatorial actions they are taking. In the end, I don't think we are going back to some Democratic normal. The only way forward is to fundamentally remake our system of government so that common people have power, rights and equality, so that we are never again ruled by a plutocratic regime.
